This map and the next show the same pattern for the population age 85 and older. Although the proportions of people in this age group are obviously not as large as for the whole population over 65, the implications may be more important, because people this age usually need more health care and help from family or other providers.
The rate is 1.3% for the state in 1996; this will probably rise to 2.2% in 2020. The growth will become much more dramatic when most of the boomers reach these ages in the 2040s.
