Notes:
In North Carolina, 12.7% of the population was age 65 or older in 1996. The estimate for 1998 is 12.8%. As this map shows, counties vary in the proportion of their population in that age group. The yellow counties, found mostly in the Piedmont, still have quite young populations--with less than 12% older adults. At the other extreme, the red counties, found mostly in the West, have 16 percent or more.
The range across the state goes from a low of 5.4% older adults in Onslow County to a high of 25.2% in Polk.
