End-of-Life Issues

  • The NC Cooperative Extension Service provides both printed booklets and information at their web site on living wills and health care power of attorney, including model forms for each.
  • Starting in November 1997, National Public Radio began airing a series of programs on "The End of Life: Exploring Death in America," and they have created an extensive web site (http://www.npr.org/programs/death/) with transcripts of the programs, lists of organizations that can help people facing end-of-life issues, a bibliography, readings about death and dying, and personal stories from visitors to this web site.
  • The Public Broadcasting System aired a program entitled, "Before I Die: Medical Care and Personal Choices" in April 1997. Television station WNET's web site, (http://www.wnet.org/archive/bid/p-description.html) provides transcripts of the program. The case of "Alan Russo" provides the spark for a discussion on advance directives.

  • Holstein, Martha, and Phyllis Mitzen, eds. 1998. Ethics and aging: Bringing the issues home. Generations 22(3). This entire issue contains articles concerning ethics and the care of older people. Go to http://www.asaging.org/generations/gen.html to read Holstein and Mitzen’s introduction on line.
  • In Generations 22(3), June L. Noel's article, “Florida’s Ethics and Aging Initiative,” mentions a website that has suggestions and guidelines for developing community-based ethics committees for providers of aging services. This site, at http://grants.cohpa.ucf.edu/age-ethics/, also provides case examples with commentary.
  • Several issues of The New Social Worker contain articles on the NASW Code, prepared by Kimberly Strom-Gottfried and Katherine Dunlap, of the UNC School of Social Work faculty. You can order back issues of this magazine on line at http://www.socialworker.com/backissu.htm.
  • The NC Legislature, Duke Endowment, and Cannon Foundation make full-text versions of articles in many professional journals available over the Web through NC Live (http://www.nclive.org/). Consult a librarian at your local public library or community college to use this data base or to obtain a your own password for using it on your personal computer.
