School celebrates $1 million gift, professorship
Chancellor Moeser
Chancellor
James Moeser

Close to 200 people gathered at the Tate-Turner-Kuralt auditorium on Friday, Sept. 14 to celebrate the establishment of the Sandra Reeves Spears and John B. Turner Distinguished Professorship.

The gift enables the school to establish an endowed chair to attract a leading scholar who will teach students methods of working with families, engagement with community agencies and promoting best practice models.

Speakers included James Moeser, Chancellor of UNC-Chapel Hill; Roger Perry, Chair of the UNC-Chapel Hill Board of Trustees; $1 million donor Sam Reeves and his daughter, Sandra Reeves Spears; and School of Social Work faculty members Mark Fraser and Dean Jack Richman. Special guests included John and Marian Turner, Janie and Billy Armfield, Louise Coggins, and Dean and Linnea Smith.

"If I had to name one of our schools that embodies the spirit and the ethos of Carolina, it is this school," said Moeser. "This school has the heart of the university itself in the way it reaches out and touches the lives of people, especially people in need across North Carolina, across this nation, and indeed across the world. We are enormously proud of this school and so grateful for the philanthropy which honors the work that goes on here."

Alumni: a student needs you as a mentor
girl
The School of Social Work Alumni Council is calling for alumni volunteers who would be interested in mentoring an enrolled student during the 2007-08 academic year. This program is designed to match students with alumni who are practicing in an area of the students' interest. It is an informal way for students to network and receive real world knowledge without being graded.

We've had a few responses from alumni, but need more if we are to really get this program off the ground. Please consider giving a little bit of your time to help a student. If you are interested, e-mail your job title and agency, the best way to contact you, and a short paragraph about what you do to Kristen Huffman.

Please be our friend

Kristen Huffman created a MySpace page for the School of Social Work, and invites all alumni with a MySpace account to join our page as a friend. Kristen's online daily, and is in the process of posting graduation photos. Join us today - it's a fun way to connect!
