School Seeks Alumni Participation in March Workshop and April Career Day

Job Preparation Workshop

The School of Social Work will sponsor a “Before, During and After the Interview” job preparation workshop for current SSW students on Monday, March 5 from 12:15-1:45 p.m. in Room 300 of the Tate-Turner-Kuralt Building. We would like to have a panel of alumni present at the workshop to discuss their interviewing experiences, share tips for the interviewing process, and respond to student questions. Invitation to Recruit Students and Attend Continuing Education Workshop

The School of Social Work will host its annual Career Day/Job Fair on April 2 from 10:30 a.m. - 1:30 p.m. We welcome all potential employers to take advantage of this free opportunity to recruit well-qualified MSW and BSW graduates. Following Career Day, the School has planned an afternoon continuing education workshop for recruiters. The workshop, “Courting Ethics: Legal Precedents and Decisions Involving Ethical Issues,” will be facilitated by Clinical Assistant Professor Joanne Caye. Gary Shaffer has been named the Advocate of the Year by the National Association of Social Workers - North Carolina Chapter (NASW-NC). Shaffer received the honor for his leadership in school social work and as a social work educator.

 

 

Anna Scheyett has been named the 2007 Social Worker of the Year by the North Carolina Chapter of the National Association of Social Work (NASW-NC). Scheyett’s social work career spans almost 20 years, during which she has focused her teaching, research and service in the areas of substance abuse, mental health and social justice. The NASW-NC Social Worker of the Year Award is an annual award that is given to a distinguished NASW member who has demonstrated commendable social work practice, and commitment and involvement with NASW.

Tiffany Christian PhD ’05 is an assistant professor at the Appalachian State University. She, her husband, Raymond, and children, Rayanna and RJ, welcomed twins, Rayna and Raylen to their family in March 2006.

   
 

Call for Nominations: Distinguished Alumnus/Alumna Award

The School is currently accepting nominations for the 2007 award. Please e-mail or mail your nominations to Kristen Huffman at kristen_huffman@unc.edu (CB#3550, Chapel Hill, N.C. 27599-3550) by April 1, 2007. Please be sure to include a letter or paragraph about the person you are nominating which explains why you are making the nomination. To qualify, the nominee must be a graduate of the School and meet some of the following criteria:

1. Demonstrate outstanding leadership and make significant contributions to the field of social work.
2. Demonstrate a deep commitment to high ethical social work standards.
3. Develop and/or implement major innovations that have improved the quality of life for members in her/his community.
4. Benefit her/his clients, the professional community and the social work profession through special contributions, advocacy and involvement in professional, civic or community organizations.
5. Be an effective advocate for social work issues.
