School Well Represented at 2007 Society for Social Work and Research Conference

Thirty-five faculty members and graduate students from the School of Social Work attended the 2007 Society for Social Work and Research (SSWR) Conference held Jan. 11-14 in San Francisco. Ten alumni from the School's doctoral program were also in attendance. Faculty members and students were involved in all aspects of the conference. They served as organizers, moderators or presenters for one of the five workshops, five of the 18 symposia and three of the 22 special interest group meetings held at the conference. Oscar Barbarin has been elected to the Governing Council of the Society for Research in Child Development (SRCD). SRCD is a multidisciplinary, not-for-profit, professional association with a membership of approximately 5,500 researchers, practitioners, and human development professionals from over 50 countries. The purposes of the Society are to promote multidisciplinary research in the field of human development, to foster the exchange of information among scientists and other professionals of various disciplines, and to encourage applications of research findings.

Kathy Johnson has been elected to serve a three- year term on the Board of Directors of the American Professional Society on the Abuse of Children (APSAC). The APSAC is a nonprofit national organization focused on meeting the needs of professionals engaged in all aspects of services for maltreated children and their families. Especially important to the APSAC is the dissemination of state-of-the-art practice in all professional disciplines related to child abuse and neglect. Johnson has also served as a board member, secretary, president elect and president of the North Carolina chapter of APSAC.

Sabrina Williamson Sullenberger PhD ’03 is an assistant professor at the Indiana University School of Social Work. She and her husband Ryan welcomed their first child, Cosette, in May 2006.

IN MEMORIAM

Sally A. Miller ’78 of Highland Park, Pa., passed away Sept. 16 at age 54 of Lou Gehrig's disease. Miller began her career working in a migrant health clinic in Florida where she served farm workers from Mexico, haiti and other countries. In 1989, she moved to Pittsburgh, Pa., to work for the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. She then obtained a degree as a registered nurse from Mercy Hospital in Pittsburgh, where she helped develop a medication program for uninsured people. She also worked closely with multiple sclerosis patients. In 2004 the Sally Miller Award for Advocacy on the Behalf of the Medically Underserved was established at the University of Pittsburgh to honor Miller's extraordinary care of the people she helped as a social worker. Miller is survived by a sister and a brother, Richard Miller of Edgewood, Ky. Memorials may be made to the Sally Miller Award, University of Pittsburgh, MHSF, 3708 Fifth Ave., Suite 400, Pittsburgh, P.A., 15213.

   
 

Call for Volunteers: Job Preparation Workshop for Current Students

The School of Social Work will sponsor a “Before, During and After the Interview” job preparation workshop for current SSW students on Monday, March 15 from 12:15-1:45 p.m. in Room 300 of the Tate-Turner-Kuralt Building. We would like to have a panel of alumni present at the workshop to discuss their interviewing experiences, share tips for the interviewing process and respond to student questions. Call for Nominations: Distinguished Alumnus/Alumna Award

The School is currently accepting nominations for the 2007 award. Please e-mail or mail your nominations to Kristen Huffman at kristen_huffman@unc.edu (CB#3550, Chapel Hill, N.C. 27599-3550) by April 1, 2007. Please be sure to include a letter or paragraph about the person you are nominating which explains why you are making the nomination. To qualify, the nominee must be a graduate of the School and meet some of the following criteria:

1. Demonstrate outstanding leadership and make significant contributions to the field of social work.
2. Demonstrate a deep commitment to high ethical social work standards.
3. Develop and/or implement major innovations that have improved the quality of life for members in her/his community.
4. Benefit her/his clients, the professional community and the social work profession through special contributions, advocacy and involvement in professional, civic or community organizations.
5. Be an effective advocate for social work issues.

Mental Health Reform Workshop - Part II

Part II focuses on mental health "parity," or the equitable provision of mental healthcare services (at least on par with other healthcare services). This workshop highlights the urgency of this matter, describes how the parity debate affects everyone, and outlines the steps that can be taken by concerned yet busy clinicians - to help advance mental health as a priority for the community.
