The Graduate Record Examinations (GRE) General Test is required by the Graduate School for admission to the MSW program at UNC-Chapel Hill School of Social Work. The GRE revised General Test measures verbal reasoning, quantitative reasoning, and analytical writing skills.

By participating in the GRE Overview Workshops, participants will become familiar with the newly revised GRE test structure and learn how to get the most out of the study aid, learn how to prepare for the verbal section (including text completion, sentence equivalence and reading comprehension), review the math concepts likely to be tested on the GRE and explore strategies to approach the quantitative section, and develop a plan to tackle the analytical writing section of the GRE revised General Test.

Additional information regarding the workshop and location will be sent after your registration has been received.

If you have any questions about registering for the GRE Overview Workshop, please contact Tiffany Carver at tscarver@email.unc.edu or by phone at (919) 843-8452.

About the GRE Revised General Test

Starting on August 1, 2011, the GRE revised General Test will replace the current GRE General Test. The new GRE revised General Test retains the verbal, quantitative and analytical writing sections, however significant changes are being introduced such as new types of questions and a new scoring system.

A summary of the changes to the GRE revised General Test include:

  • The computer based test will now allow you to edit or change your answers, skip questions, and also provides an on-screen calculator for the quantitative section.
  • The verbal section will no longer test on analogies and antonyms. Text completions, sentence equivalence and reading comprehension questions, which are designed to test verbal reasoning abilities, will comprise the verbal section.
  • Several new question types are being introduced such as multiple-choice questions with more than one answer and select-in-passage questions.
  • The new GRE revised General Test will use a scoring scale from 130-170, in one point increments, for the verbal and quantitative sections. The analytical writing section scores will remain 0-6, in half-point increments.

Test takers who take the GRE revised General Test between August 1 and September 30, 2011 will receive a special 50% discount, however, scores will not be available until mid-November for those taking the GRE during this discounted period.
