The specific mission of the School's educational program is to prepare students for careers in strengthening families and communities through public and nonprofit settings, to develop and test knowledge related to social work and to provide leadership in addressing social problems. This is in accord with the School's inception in 1920 as a School of Public Welfare and its subsequent record of providing human service agencies in the state with professional staff. Specific curriculum concerns support the School's educational mission and recognize the uniqueness of the region served. Curriculum concerns are for disadvantaged, vulnerable, and oppressed individuals, families and communities. The primary goal of the Doctoral Program at the School of Social is to produce research scholars in social work that have the requisite knowledge base and tools for building and disseminating a body of tested theory for planning and implementing social interventions. The doctoral program brings together a highly selected group of doctoral students and social work faculty to conduct basic and applied evaluative research into key human service issues. This cadre of professionals will augment and support existing social work resources at all levels by providing needed research and designing and evaluating innovative models of practice. |
