Social development expert Michael Sherraden, Ph.D., will give a public lecture titled “Savings, Assets and Financial Inclusion in the U.S. and Globally: Promises and Challenges,” on March 12 at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Social Work.
Sherraden is the Benjamin E. Youngdahl Professor of Social Development in the George Warren Brown School of Social Work at Washington University at St. Louis, and the founder and director of the school’s Center for Social Development.
The lecture is at 11 a.m. in the auditorium of the Tate-Turner-Kuralt Building on Pittsboro Street on the UNC campus.
Sherraden will discuss his work on policies and programs that have helped millions of low-income people in the U.S. and globally to build assets. His talk will include an overview of individual development accounts (IDAs), a matched savings program that he created and designed to help working poor people save money and accumulate assets. IDAs have been adopted in federal legislation and in more than 40 states.
He will also discuss children’s savings accounts and the influence of this work on policy development in other countries.
Sherraden has served as an adviser and consultant to the White House, the Department of Treasury, the Department of Housing and Urban Development, the Department of Health and Human Services, the Carnegie Council and many other organizations. His work on assets has influenced policy development in the United Kingdom, Taiwan, Canada and other countries.
The lecture is presented by the School of Social Work; the Center on Poverty, Work and Opportunity in the UNC School of Law; and the Center for Community Capital in the UNC College of Arts and Sciences.
