For all agency directors, field instructors, alumni, and other potential Career Day recruiters:

The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Social Work is hosting its annual Career Day/Job Fair on Monday, April 7, 2008, from 10:30 am-1:30 pm at the School of Social Work. After Career Day, a continuing education workshop will be held at the School of Social Work from 2:00-4:00 p.m. Sponsors for Career Day include the UNC-Chapel Hill School of Social Work, the North Carolina Chapter of the National Association of Social Workers, UNC-Chapel Hill Career Services Office, and Vanguard Professional Staffing. All human service organizations interested in recruiting students at Career Day are welcome to register and attend.

On Career Day, the School invites its MSW students as well as undergraduate students from North Carolina BSW programs to explore social work career opportunities. Graduates of UNC-Chapel Hill School of Social Work are well qualified, having on average two years of social work experience prior to coming to graduate school. In addition to a curriculum that allows students to concentrate in a field of practice, most students have also had 1200 hours of MSW supervised field practice. North Carolina BSW students come from outstanding BSW programs where students are prepared for entry-level professional social work positions. Career Day gives agencies an opportunity to recruit MSW or BSW social work students for current and future job openings, and to interest students in their field of service.

The School of Social Work community, especially the students, are aware of the many changes occurring in human service agencies. The School hopes you will consider participating in this Career Day, even if you do not expect to hire in the next six months. Your presence and insight are valuable and will provide students with a sense of some of the new directions for human services. Last year over 150 students and over 50 organizations attended Career Day. If you are unable to attend but have some materials that you would like to be available for students, please send them to the address at the top of the page c/o Beth Sauer and they will displayed at Career Day.

Following Career Day, we have planned a continuing education workshop for recruiters. School of Social Work Clinical Assistant Professor Tina Souders will facilitate a workshop from 2:00-4:00 p.m. entitled “The Ethics of Silence.” The workshop will be offered at no cost to recruiters and alumni of the School, and the School will provide participants with a certificate documenting completion of two contact hours at the conclusion of the session. If you would like to attend this event, please note your interest on the Career Day registration form and return it as soon as possible.

If you are interested in sending a representative to Career Day, please submit the registration form before the registration deadline Thursday, March 20. Please register as soon as possible; because of limited space, we will accept registration forms for only 60 exhibit booths on a first-come, first-served basis. We will provide parking and lunch for two agency representatives. For each additional representative, there is a $10 per person fee. Sarah Naylor, Assistant Dean for Student Affairs, will be coordinating the event along with Beth Sauer, Student Services Assistant. If you have any questions or would like additional information, please contact Ms. Sauer at (919) 962-6443 or bhsauer@email.unc.edu.

Details about the schedule for the day, parking and transportation, and the continuing education workshop will be mailed in March to all those who plan to attend. We look forward to your participation in this event.
