Faculty Members Receive Honors

Kathleen Rounds, Ph.D., was awarded the Friend of Public Health Social Work Award by the South Carolina Department of Health on May 2nd at the annual Lucia Murchison Public Health Social Work Conference in Columbia, S.C.

Florence Soltys '84, received the 2003 Sharon Wilder Advocacy Award in April. The honor was given by the Friends of Residents in Long Term Care, a nonprofit citizen advocacy organization for residents in North Carolina's long term care facilities.

Soltys received the award for her many years of work in aging services, including her four terms on the Board of Directors at Carol Woods Retirement Community in Chapel Hill, her leadership on the Orange County Board for Aging, and her national service on the Leadership Council for the American Society of Aging, the Board of the Southern Gerontological Society, and the Board of International Society for Reminiscence and Life Review.

Kim Strom-Gottried, Ph.D., has been selected as one of 20 participants for Dartmouth College's Faculty Summer Institute 2003 entitled Teaching the Ethical, Legal, and Social Implications of the Human Genome Project. The week-long institute in August will prepare faculty to teach genetic literacy and to introduce some of the key ethical, legal, and social implications of human genome research to students.
