School Co-sponsors Conference on Women and Addiction

The School of Social Work is a co-sponsor of the 20 th Annual Addiction: Focus on Women Conference to be held May 15-19 at the Kanuga Conference Center in Hendersonville, N.C.

The week-long conference will address the special needs and concerns of substance abusing women and their families. It will also focus on the involvement of emotional, physical, mental and spiritual healing and health for both clients and caregivers as they work together in the treatment of and recovery from substance abuse and addictive behaviors. Up to 30 hours of continuing education credit is available in the area of substance abuse from the N.C. Substance Abuse Professional Practice Board.

The conference is organized in a series of full-week or partial week programs which include keynote speakers, speaker mini-sessions and various full and short speaker tracks based on topic. The conference will also take advantage of its serene mountain location and offer relaxing and invigorating activities for free time outside of conference sessions. These activities include morning yoga sessions, afternoon and evening massage therapy and a special location for participants to go for spiritual practices and meditation. There will also be special celebratory activities throughout the week to celebrate the conference’s 20th anniversary.

The conference is organized by the Mountain Area Health Education Center and is also sponsored by the North Carolina Division of Mental Health, Developmental Disabilities and Substance Abuse Services; Pavillon International; the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Substance Abuse & Mental Health Services Administration’s Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders Center for Excellence; the Southern Regional Area Health Education Center’s North Carolina Evidence-Based Practices Center; and Pine Grove Behavioral Health and Addiction Services.
